Next, you’ll remember we moved on to specific phrases that should season the vocabulary of Christians. The first phrase that we talked about is, “Bless you.”
Our concept of blessing is rooted in God’s blessing of his people. We see God blessing his people in many ways: the creation, with the Law, the
Genesis 12:1–2 1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.
God ultimately blesses his people in Jesus who is the fulfillment of God’s promised blessing Abraham and his descendants.
Galatians 3:13–14 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
God’s people are then to bless God in response to his blessing.
Ephesians 1:3 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
Christians are also bless one another. Blessing is the projection of good into another’s life. Here’s an example of maybe the most famous blessing in Scripture.
Numbers 6:22–27 22 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 23 “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them, 24 The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; 26 the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. 27 “So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”
