Concern for the Poor in the Psalms and Proverbs

THURSDAY

This week in our devotional, since last Sunday was Serve Sunday, we are going to simply read some passages in Scripture about caring for the poor. This is a consistent theme throughout all of Scripture.

Today let’s look at a few passages from the Psalms and Proverbs that reveal God’s concern for the poor.

Proverbs 19:17 17 Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.

Proverbs 14:31 31 Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.”

Proverbs 21:13 13 Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered."

Psalm 41:1 1 Blessed is the one who considers the poor! In the day of trouble the Lord delivers him.

Psalm 140:12 12 I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy.

In a charge to the judges of Israel

Psalm 82:3–4 3 Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. 4 Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

Of the good king of Israel

Psalm 72:12–14 12 For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. 13 He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death. 14 He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for precious is their blood in his sight.
