Tuesday March 2: Hospitality as Friendship

Yesterday, we saw the etymology of the word for hospitality and how it most often carried a connotation of befriending someone who is different than you and welcoming them into your sphere of life.

This being the case, I think we should be thinking of hospitality in a broader sense than we tend to think of, in our context. Today, at least it seems to me, we tend to think of it mostly in the sense of welcoming someone into your home for dinner or for a short stay, or something along those lines. This is, certainly, a part of hospitality, but I think we should broaden it out to any activities of friendship—getting coffee, going out for lunch, walking together, etc. Remember our etymology of the words translated "hospitality" contain "philo" (friend).

Hebrews 13:2 Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.
