Friday Dec 4: Sabbath - What you will do

By now we've planned a day and or times to practice sabbath and we've thought about what we are not going to do on our sabbath time. Now lets think about what we are going to do on our Sabbath day. I find it helpful to run everything I do through the filters of worship and rest (I add play to my filter because I have small kids and playing brings our household so much joy). If your sabbath day is Sunday, corporate worship in the Sunday gathering obviously fits in as worship. Things like taking a nap, praying, reading a book, throwing a baseball in the back yard, going for a walk, getting coffee or having dinner with friends are great activities to plan that will refresh your soul.

So plan out what you will do for this upcoming Sabbath you've planned. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time between activities to be sure you are not hurried because as Dallas Willard says, "Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life in our day. We must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from our lives." That's what sabbath is all about—taking a day to stop, rest and worship. A day that is sacred, set apart for God. A day challenges the status quo, forcing you to slow down, rest, and trust in God.
