WEDNESDAY
For our final week in the campaign, I try to give you some practices in the devotionals that will help ground you in the way of Jesus, particularly as it relates to the topics discussed in the campaign.
Next in Isaiah 30:15 we come to the practice of repentance.
Isaiah 30:15 (NIV) 15 This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.
Repentance means to “turn around” or “change your mind.” In the immediate context of Isaiah 30, the people of Israel were living in sin, violating God’s covenant stipulations. As a part of the covenant God made through Moses with the people of Israel, the people were to obey God’s laws and, in response, he would protect them. They weren’t, and so God was bringing about the discipline he promised he would bring when they entered into this covenant relationship together. If the people would repent of their sins and idolatry, God would save them from the coming invasions of enemy nations.
In the New Testament era, our covenant relationship with God is a little different. Our salvation is by God’s grace alone through faith. Our initial acceptance of God’s grace must be preceded by a repentance. As a practice in the Christian life, however, ongoing repentance is not a matter of salvation. That has been accomplished for us by Jesus. It is instead a matter of realigning ourselves to God. Though we are saved, we still sin and our sin is a deviation from God’s will and ways. In repentance we confess our sin and commit to walk in line with God’s truth and God’s ways.
Check out our Confession and Repentance page for help in how to get started with this practice.
