Sabbath

TUESDAY

For our final week in the campaign, I try to give you some practices in the devotionals that will help ground you in the way of Jesus, particularly as it relates to the topics discussed in the campaign.

As we did yesterday, we are looking at some of the practices reflected in Isaiah 30:15 to help us become the type of people who can trust God to fight for us.

Isaiah 30:15 (NIV) 15 This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.

Today, let’s focus on rest. Rest is a huge theme in the Bible and I’m resisting the temptation to dig into it further. The word here in Isaiah 30:15 refers to calm and patience. The practice that teaches us to be calm and patient is the Sabbath. The word sabbath comes from the word to cease. It is often translated as rest (Gen. 2:2). On a Sabbath day we cease from our normal work activities to rest and worship.

The Sabbath is an important practice, especially as it relates to God fighting for us. Pretty much every Sunday there are lots of thing on my “to-do list” that I am actively choosing to leave undone for a time. This practice of choosing to rest instead of maximizing every moment for work, forces me to trust God with the things that I am not getting done at the moment. It helps reorient me to trust.

Check out our SabbathSabbath page for some suggestions on how to get started with this practice.
