Service

FRIDAY

For our final week in the campaign I try to give you some practices in the devotionals that will help ground you in the way of Jesus, particularly as it relates to the topics discussed in the campaign.

As we come to our final practice to help us become the type of people who can be still and trust God to fight for us, I want to talk about the practice of service. But I want to talk about it from a specific angle. I’m not really thinking of service from the lens of volunteering at church. I’m thinking of it as a bigger life practice of sacrificial service.

Some of us have been in such control of our lives that we rarely, if ever, have experienced a situation which required God to fight for us. If something is difficult, we just don’t do it. If something is outside of our control, we avoid it. If something is outside of our skill set, we reject it. If we have other commitments we say “no.” We’ve never really been stretched to do something outside of our power. We’ve never truly needed God to fight for us.

Now, the solution isn’t to just go and do something reckless and hope God delivers you from your stupidity. Instead, if this sounds like you, I’d encourage you to really pray, seek the Lord, and ask him to reveal how he wants to display his power in your life. How is he calling you to serve and rely on his power? As Todd Ballard preached, we are called to trust and obey. The key is hearing what God is calling us to—so we can trust and obey his call, no matter how big or small.

I think of George Müller who started and maintained an orphanage without asking anyone for money. He only prayed, trusted, and waited on God to provide the needs. And God always provided. This is what God called him to do and each time God came through, Müller‘s faith was strengthened.

You guessed it, if you’d like more info on how to get started with your practice of service, check out our spiritual practices page of ServiceService.
